What is Delta- tocotrienol (Annatto seed Extract, Annatto Tocotrienol)?
Annatto, sometimes called roucou or achiote, is derived from the seeds of the achiote trees of tropical and subtropical regions around the world. The seeds are sourced to produce a carotenoid-based yellow to orange food coloring and flavor. Its scent is described as "slightly peppery with a hint of nutmeg" and flavor as "slightly nutty, sweet and peppery".
Vitamin E is a family of eight separate but related molecules: four tocopherols (alpha, beta, gamma, delta) and four tocotrienols (alpha, beta, gamma, delta). While alpha-tocopherol exists in most multivitamins and is supplemented in foods, a growing base of evidence suggests that this popular vitamin E interferes with the uptake and function of tocotrienols. Tocotrienols are derived from three major sources, including rice, palm and annatto. Annatto provides the only tocopherol-free source of tocotrienols.
The structures of Tocopherol and Tocotrienols are as follows:
Health Benefits of Delta- tocotrienol (Annatto seed Extract, Annatto Tocotrienol)
Vitamin E tocotrienols from annatto reduce inflammation and oxidative stress biomarkers associated with cardiovascular and aging disease, according to a new clinical study. Findings published in Clinical & Experimental Cardiology demonstrated that annatto tocotrienol —inhibiting cardiovascular risk factors including inflammatory cytokines, nitric oxide (NO) and C-reactive protein (CRP).
The tocotrienols have shown benefits far superior to the tocopherols, in lowering total and LDL cholesterol, supporting overall cardiovascular and metabolic health, and recently even in cancer cell suppression.
